For generations, the Jones family has been synonymous with community service in Chester.
Tommie Lee Jones devoted more than 50 years to uplifting young people through mentorship, community programs, and advocacy. As founder of the Black Youth Society, later known as Youth in Action, she helped hundreds of Chester youth access educational support, community service opportunities, recreational programs, and positive pathways for success.
By her side was her husband Isiah A. Jones Sr., known to many simply as “Mr. Ike”. He became a trusted source of support for neighbors seeking jobs, guidance, resources, and encouragement.
Together, they built a legacy rooted in service, opportunity, and unwavering belief in the potential of Chester’s young people.

Turning a Family Legacy into a Scholarship Fund
When Tommie Lee Jones passed away in 1999, her son, Isiah “Ike” Jones Jr., knew he wanted her life’s work to continue making a difference.
Working alongside TCF, Ike established the Jones Scholarship Fund in memory of his parents. Through TCF’s stewardship, scholarship administration, fundraising support, and community partnerships, the family’s vision became a lasting charitable initiative focused on helping students pursue higher education and achieve their goals.

At TCF’s Community Celebration, Ike reflected on the inspiration behind the fund:
“My mother passed away in 1999 after dedicating 50 years of service in the Chester community. My heart’s desire—and what my mother deserved—was for her legacy to continue affecting lives. Not having experience establishing a scholarship fund, I reached out to some of her colleagues and was given the contact information for The Community’s Foundation. I will be forever grateful for their commitment and dedication in honoring my wishes for my family to continue supporting young people in the community of Chester and Delaware County.” – Isiah (Ike) Jones Jr.

A Legacy Still Shaping Chester
Since its creation, the Jones Scholarship Fund has helped Delaware County students pursue higher education and career training while advancing the family’s enduring commitment to educational opportunities. Each scholarship awarded reflects the values that guided Tommie and Isiah Jones throughout their lives—service, mentorship, education, and an unwavering belief in the potential of young people.
To date, the fund has awarded 20 scholarships and provided nearly $20,000 in educational support, extending the Jones family’s legacy to a new generation of students.
TCF is proud to provide administrative support that allows every scholarship dollar to be directed to Chester students.
That impact remains visible throughout Chester today. In recognition of their extraordinary contributions to the community, the City of Chester dedicated a street (click here to watch) in honor of both Tommie Lee Jones and Isiah A. Jones Sr. – a lasting tribute to the influence she had on generations of young people and families. Together, the scholarship fund and street dedication serve as enduring reminders that the Jones family’s commitment to service, opportunity, and community continues to shape lives today.

Continuing a Legacy of Impact
The Jones Scholarship Fund is more than financial assistance. It reflects the belief that a commitment to service can create opportunities for generations. As students pursue their education and build their futures, they carry forward the values that guided Tommie Lee Jones and Isiah A. Jones Sr. – service, opportunity, and hope for the next generation.
When donors contribute to scholarship funds, they help students access educational opportunities while carrying forward a legacy that has strengthened the community for decades.
Through scholarships, charitable funds, and other philanthropic initiatives, TCF helps individuals and families transform their values into lasting community impact.
